The aim of the project is to bring together young volunteers and elderly people who were subjected to political repression in the Soviet period. The EVS volunteers take care of elderly victims of political repression in their everyday life. About 4 500 people, which was political persecuted, live now in the city and are members of the Society “Memorial”. About 40 from them are lonely and ill and need regularly help. They can’t often afford to pay for the state social help. For those aims the social voluntary service of “Youth Memorial” was created about 20 years ago. Since 2003 foreign volunteers (along with young Russians) visit elderly victims of political repression, help them with cooking, cleaning of the flat and shopping for food and medications.

We are a non-profit public charity based on voluntary contributions and grants. We work with disadvantaged children, kids from multi-child and needy families. The organization has existed for 20 years. The initial aim was to eliminate the number of homeless children. In 7 years we reached this goal and kept on doing other activities: opened shelters, 2 drop-in centers, focusing on socializing those children. Now the organization is working with a special orphanage, risk group children from the suburbs, and children in prison.

It is eight a clock in the morning and the alarm is ringing. This Thursday, as every Thursday for the last two months, I am going to one of my babushkas living in Perm. After having breakfast I am doing some language studies. When arriving to Perm I did not speak any Russian, so during my time here I am also trying to learn the language.
